LASIK, an acronym for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, is a kind of refractive laser eye surgery procedure carried out by ophthalmologists meant for correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The procedure is usually a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, PRK, as it needs less time for full recovery, and the client experiences less pain overall. Lots of patients opt for LASIK as an alternative to wearing corrective glasses or contact lenses. The LASIK technique was discovered by Spanish ophthalmologist Jose Barraquer, who around 1960 developed the first microkeratome, used to cut thin flaps in the cornea and alter its shape, in a procedure called keratomileusis.
