LASIK, an acronym for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, is a form of refractive laser eye surgery method done by ophthalmologists intended for correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The procedure is usually a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, PRK, as it needs less time for full recovery, and the patient experiences less pain overall. Several patients choose LASIK as an alternative to wearing corrective glasses or contact lenses. The LASIK technique was discovered by Spanish ophthalmologist Jose Barraquer, who around 1960 developed the first microkeratome, used to cut thin flaps in the cornea and alter its shape, in a procedure called keratomileusis.

This may be true even if you only required a very weak prescription before surgery. If you used reading glasses before surgery, you may still need reading glasses after procedure.
